The Chess Set
How We Describe Our Books
Book descriptions and condition grading policy.
Book Descriptions
We aim to provide clear, accurate, and honest descriptions for every book we list.
Each listing typically includes:
- A short summary of the book’s content
- Bibliographic details (author, publisher, year, etc.)
- Physical details (size, binding type)
- A condition report describing any wear or defects
Condition Grading Policy
Many of our books are second-hand or collectible; minor signs of wear are normal. Our grading follows these conventions:
-
Fine (F)
As new. No faults. Clean, tight, and unread-looking.
-
Very Good (VG)
Minor signs of handling only. May show light shelf wear, but remains clean and solid.
-
Good (G)
Noticeable signs of use, but still complete and sound. May include light wear to covers, mild tanning, small marks, or a slightly loosened binding.
-
Fair
Clearly worn. Defects may include heavier rubbing, foxing, inscriptions, or a loose binding, but the book remains readable and complete.
-
Poor
Heavily worn, damaged, or incomplete. Offered only when the book is scarce or of reference value.
Dust Jackets
Where applicable, dust jackets are described separately and may have wear such as chipping, tears, or price clipping.
